Materia | Marco Gasser (Zurich, 1989) is a Swiss multidisciplinary artist working across photography, film, and mixed media. He holds a degree in Graphic Design and has spent the past decade working as a film director on both commercial and independent projects. While photography has always been part of his life, his engagement with the medium has grown steadily over the years, becoming a central tool for visual expression.

His practice primarily focuses on documenting the natural world, with a particular interest in landscape as a site of duration and change. Today, he places particular emphasis on his photographic practice—primarily self-initiated work, often extended into printed matter—alongside film direction/editing across both personal and commercial productions.

His photographs, primarily captured on Polaroid, are infused with a vibrant energy. They transcend traditional still images, acting instead as visual experiences—spaces where reality starts to blend, and textures and narratives intertwine.

Marco approaches his photography with a sensibility honed through years of exploring various art forms, including drawing, painting, graphic design, and graffiti. This early embrace of diverse mediums laid the foundation for his artistic identity, and today, it inspires a creative process that often feels like beautifully orchestrated chaos. Rather than pursuing perfection, he embraces the unexpected.

Each image reflects a journey—mental, emotional, and physical. His preparation is just as crucial as the final photograph: a thoughtful, patient approach followed by a conscious release of control. He sets the scene and allows the moment to unfold. The interplay of light, film, and instinct creates a dialogue. There’s a rhythm to his creative process, palpable in the layers of his photographs, which are often dreamlike, occasionally raw, but always brimming with emotion.
