I Grieve the Beauty | These images represent part of an ongoing project called I Grieve the Beauty, made near my home, in Scotland and in Tokyo, Japan. It formed part of an exhibition by Ephemere Tokyo in 2025.

I Grieve the Beauty is a visual elegy that tells a deeply personal story of love and loss, of grief and the lonely road to healing. It speaks of the transience of the lived experience of love, its inevitable passing into memory and the longing of the heart to find its way back. It is testament to the ephemeral beauty of the finer feelings, which cannot always be expressed in words.

In our vulnerability and trust, we travel the path to love. Time passes through everything, and love is no exception.

Sarah Garland is a fine art photographer based in England, UK. Her work has gained recognition through international publications and competition awards (including a Prix de la Photographie Gold Award last year), and group exhibitions in London and Glasgow, New York and Vermont, Tokyo, Paris and Budapest.

Through the camera, Sarah enters an intimate relationship between her surroundings and inner world. Whilst her work is profoundly personal and holds up a mirror to parts of herself, it also bears witness to something greater. It is a search for ‘essence’ – for that which lies beyond the surface, for the light behind the light. Sarah’s hope is to create imagery that connects the viewer to what is within them and what is beyond themselves.
